There are a lot of complaints about this bulb not producing a classical and neat "spot" of light, and given the size of the COB lighting element this is most likely true for non-focusing flashlights. But old Maglites can be adjusted to allow for that, and when these are installed in Mags a very nice "spot" can be seen.Lots more griping about the "dimness" of the light produced. In my opinion people have come to believe that their flashlights must create blinding levels of pure white light - no matter what the cost in increasingly expensive batteries. I dug out an old incandescent PR2 bulb and put it into a flashlight with new batteries. In a very dark small room I compared the illumination from that light with another one fitted with one of these 3 volt bulbs. Same yellow spot, but this LED produced at least twice the light as the ancient "hot wire" bulb. The new COB bulb is drawing about 15% of the current from the batteries as the old incandescent, so those batteries will last at least 6 times longer. This is not a trivial factor in disaster situations where the stores may not be open to buy more batteries for a very long time!Finally, regarding the ugly unfocused "spot" output when this bulb goes into standard (non-Mag) flashlights. In a power outage where you'd have the flashlight sitting in a drinking glass or vase pointed at a white ceiling, SO WHAT? This setup is both cheaper and safer than any candles or oil lamps producing similar amounts of light. The Maglite company is missing a bet by not marketing disaster flashlights fitted out with low-draw bulbs like this one.
